shilpa-shetty-01Shilpa Shetty is planning to get saucier than ever and launch her own range of ready-made food, a report has claimed. She is also considering starting a chain of restaurants in honour of her Big Brother co-participant Jade Goody, who died in March. And the ready made food she plans to begin her new business with is poppadoms. One must remember that Jade Goody called her “Shilpa Poppa-dom” on Big Brother, which then sparked the whole racial row. “Shilpa thinks Jade will have a little chuckle in heaven about the poppadoms,” the Daily Star quoted a source as saying. Shilpa’s chicken curry, which divided the house with accusations of under-cooked meat and excessive use of onions, is also expected to be included in the menu. “She has been inundated with requests for her curry recipe and one day she just thought: ‘Why don’t I just create my own range? One of Shilpa’s passions in life is healthy living so she wanted to incorporate that into her dishes,” the source added.

While career expansion is something everyone is entitled to, one does think that Shilpa’s failure as an actress in Bollywood is pushing her to looking at parallel careers elsewhere. And she is breaking all records for diversity. In the last two years, she has launched perfumes, recorded yoga/exercise DVDs and she has worked on a spa project amongst several TV projects. In February this year Shilpa and her partner Raj Kundra became owners of the India Premiere League franchise cricket team Rajasthan Royals. And now she wants to step into the healthy food business by opening a chain of curry houses. Only Shilpa can explain how any curry can be considered healthy but we’d love to see her trying.

Voting starts in Afghan election

Posted by bhoot On August - 20 - 2009

afghanisKABUL: Thousands of polling centers across Afghanistan opened for voting Thursday, and millions of Afghans were expected to choose a new president to lead a nation plagued by armed insurgency, drugs, corruption and a feeble government.

Turnout, particularly in the violent south, will be key to the vote’s success the country’s second direct presidential election. Taliban militants have pledged to disrupt the vote and have circulated threats that those who cast ballots will be punished.

“Yes, we are going to vote,” Abdul Rahman, 35, said as he stood 50 yards (meters) outside a polling center in Kabul. He and his friends were waiting to see a line of people go inside and vote safely before casting ballots. “If anything happens to the polling center, we don’t want to be too close to it.”

Helicopters circled overhead in the capital as police manned extra checkpoints. In one northern Kabul neighborhood, a car with loudspeakers encouraged people to vote.

Karzai, who has held power since the Taliban was ousted eight years ago, is favored to finish first among 36 official candidates, although a late surge by former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah could force a runoff if no one wins more than 50 percent.

Preliminary results were expected to be announced Saturday Kabul time.

Violence has risen sharply in Afghanistan the last three years, and the U.S. now has more than 60,000 forces in the country close to eight years after the U.S. invasion following the Sept. 11 attacks of 2001.

International officials predict an imperfect outcome for a vote that they hope Afghans will accept as credible a key component of President Barack Obama’s war strategy.

On the eve of the balloting, the U.S. military announced the deaths of six more Americans putting August on track to become the deadliest month for American forces since the war began. Rising death tolls underscore the urgency of establishing a strong, effective government to stem the growing Taliban insurgency.

Karzai, a favorite of the Bush administration, won in 2004 with 55.4 percent of the vote, riding into office on a wave of public optimism after decades of war and ruinous Taliban rule. As the U.S. shifted resources to the war in Iraq, Afghanistan fell into steep decline, marked by record opium poppy harvests, deepening government corruption and skyrocketing violence.

Faced with growing public discontent, Karzai has sought to ensure his re-election by striking alliances with regional power brokers, naming as a running-mate a Tajik strongman whom he once fired as defense minister and welcoming home notorious Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, allegedly responsible in the deaths of up to 2,000 Taliban prisoners early in the Afghan war.

Those figures are believed capable of delivering millions of votes among their followers, but their presence in the Karzai inner circle has raised fears in Western capitals that the president will be unable to fulfill promises to fight corruption in a second term.

Voter turnout especially in the insurgency-plagued Pashtun south is likely to be crucial not only to Karzai’s chances but also to public acceptance of the results. Karzai is widely expected to run strong among his fellow Pashtuns, the country’s largest ethnic group which also forms the overwhelming majority of the Taliban.

Abdullah, son of a Pashtun father and a Tajik mother, is expected to win much of his votes in the Tajik north, where security is better and turnout likely to be bigger. Abdullah, an ophthalmologist who has railed against government corruption, was a member of the U.S.-backed alliance that overthrew the Taliban in 2001 and would be expected to maintain close ties with the West.

One fear is that Abdullah’s followers may charge fraud and take to the streets if Karzai claims a first-round victory without a strong southern turnout.

The country has been rife with rumors of ballot stuffing, bogus registrations and trafficking in registration cards on behalf of the incumbent, allegations his campaign has denied.

Mindful of the dangers, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged Afghans this week to hold “credible, secure and inclusive elections” and called on candidates and their supporters “to behave responsibly before and after the elections” a clear warning against street demonstrations by disappointed politicians.

“It’s very difficult in Afghanistan to see perfect elections,” Richard Holbrooke, Obama’s Afghanistan-Pakistan envoy, said during a news conference in Pakistan. “Nowhere in the world (is there) a perfect election. Don’t expect perfect elections in Afghanistan.”

In the south, turnout may be affected by the Taliban campaign of intimidation whispered threats, posted warnings and a run of headline-grabbing attacks in Kabul aimed at frightening Afghans from going to the polls.

“The Taliban control our area and they have already warned us that they will cut off our fingers or kill us if we vote,” said Abdul Majid, 25, a shop owner in Ghazni city. “I don’t want to vote.”

In Afghanistan’s two most important and dangerous southern provinces where thousands of U.S. troops deployed this summer more than 130 polling stations will not open, officials said. These included 107 out of 242 polling stations in Helmand province, the focus of the most recent fighting, and 17 out of 271 in Kandahar, where the Taliban Islamist movement was born.

Underscoring the threat, four election workers were killed Tuesday delivering materials to a polling station in northeastern Badakhshan, a province generally considered safe. Two elections workers died in a separate incident the same day when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Kandahar province, officials said Wednesday.

And on the eve of the voting, three gunmen described by police as Taliban militants took over a bank in Kabul. Police stormed the building and killed the three.

Anthony Cordesman, a former Pentagon analyst from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the election “is not functional democracy by Western standards” but the important thing would be for Afghans to “feel the election was legitimate by their standards.”

If not, he wrote in a commentary, Afghans will “see the government as distant, corrupt, and ineffective,” and empower the Taliban. AGENCIES

In conversation with Shahid Kapoor

Posted by bhoot On August - 19 - 2009

With respected names such as Vishal Bhardwaj, Gulzar, Ronie Screwvala and UTV, it is obvious that the project gets associated with huge expectations and craze even before its release. And if it also has a great energetic track, capable of bringing out all the hidden madness in you (Dhan Tan Nan), then the movie is destined to see long queues of cinema lovers at the box office window.

Vishal Bharadwaj’s film Kaminey tells the story of two twin brothers who hate and avoid each other like plague until life makes their paths cross. The movie stars Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Amole Gupte in lead roles.

The movie is a typical Vishal Bharadwaj brand of cinema. The characters are devoid of any glamour. Even the locations are rustic and hard hitting. The locations like Goregoan Station, Wadi Bunder and Kandivali junkyards and many such locations of Mumbai and Pune too add to the rawness in the film.

‘Kaminey’ is one film of its kind and the fans of Shahid Kapoor are definitely going in for a surprise! Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Kaminey’ has the actor in a character that’s completely opposite his image, hard-hitting and raw! After delivering solo 3 hits in a row, Shahid will again will be seen in one more solo starrer ‘Kaminey’, which the industry feel is quite commendable. Keeping the entire mood of the story in mind, Shahid has a look of a guy who is absolutely raw, hard and tough. This is for the first time that Shahid will be seen playing this kind of a character. It is in complete contrast to image that he has built up through films like ‘Vivah’, ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Kismat Konnections’.

“My audiences have seen me in romantic films and love stories; I hope that they will feel happy about the fact that I’m doing something different. They should give me a chance and I hope that they will not be disappointed. We have tried a lot and I’m very proud of the film that we have made,” said Shahid.

The girls went crazy while watching Shahid running bare-bodied with horses in the trailers of Kaminey. His zara hatke role in Kaminey is sure to give him a top billing among other actors. Kaminey will definately change Shahid’s entire image. It is going to put him being a hot contender amongst the others.

Shahid Kapoor said that it was a challenge to achieve a completely different look for his upcoming film ‘Kaminey’. The challenge was to achieve a completely different look and surprise the audience. ‘Kaminey’ was a genre that he has tried to explore. He expressed confidence that his audiences wouldn’t be disappointed after watching the film.

The young Shahid has high hopes from the film but the circumstances have shaken his confidence in the film. Firstly, the disturbing ‘A’ certificate to the film was least expected but as now the film has been categorized as an adult film then it definitely will reduce the film’s business at the box office. Shahid seems offended with the sensor board but at the same time he is excited as he is a hot favorite amongst the youth.

Secondly, where Shahid’s link up with his co-star Priyanka Chopra gave momentum to the film then on other rumors of blows with the director of the film, Vishal Bhardwaj, gave it a slow down. Shahid, sure had a lot to say but he felt bettered to keep quite as he didn’t want to take any risk with his rising career. And lastly (hopefully) the film’s release has been postponed for the next three days, in the entire Maharashtra due to spread of Swine Flu.

Hopefully the dark shadows from the film will soon be lifted and the movie will do great at the Box Office and help Shahid become one of the most wanted actors in Bollywood.

After playing full-on glamorous roles in films like Fashion, Dostana and Love Story 2050 last year, Priyanka Chopra has gone for a minimal make up look for Kaminey. As per the actress, this was a conscious decision since the character of Sweety that she plays in this Vishal Bhardwaj directed film is such that it doesn’t warrant extra time to be spent in front of the mirror. Just imagine, Sweety is someone who comes from a lower middle class family, lives in a chawl and is a college going 22 year old girl.

Hopefully the dark shadows from the film will soon be lifted and the movie will do great at the Box Office and help Shahid and Priyanka become one of the most wanted actors in Bollywood.

Posted by bhoot On August - 19 - 2009

Salman Khan personally invites Ranbir Kapoor for a football match, which he has organised on August 15; family and several friends to attend the match.

After news of Salman Khan bonding with Ranbir Kapoor at Mehboob Studio, Bandra, while they were shooting for Veer and Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, respectively, here comes the news that the two actors did far more than just have a casual chat over lunch.

They planned to spend time together this Independence Day on Saturday. Taking time off from his hectic shoot schedules on August 15, Salman is looking forward to the chutti. He intends to spend the day with his gang of boys playing football. He invited Ranbir when they were chatting at Mehboob Studio on Sunday afternoon.

Word has it that Salman is making sure that everything is planned perfectly for the match. He has already asked his younger brothers Arbaaz and Sohail to spread the word and they too are inviting their friends. As of now, joining the Khan brothers will be Ranbir, Dino Morea, Ashish Chaudhary, Vatsal Seth and music composers Sajid-Wajid. Many more actors and friends are expected to join the list.

Ranbir, of course, was super-excited as he is an ardent football fan. While the venue of the match is yet not known, sources say that the boys will play at one of the Bandra grounds.

Guess Salman wants to live it up this Independence Day.

India complains of militant training camps in Pakistan

Posted by bhoot On August - 19 - 2009

INDIA
NEW DELHI: India’s defense minister said on Tuesday there were dozens of Islamic militant training camps active near Pakistan’s border with India that had not been dismantled by authorities there.

“As long as the terrorist camps are functioning in the border areas in Pakistan soil, certainly there is a threat to India, and it is a fact,” A. K. Antony said in the southern state of Kerala, PTI news agency reported.

On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said that militants in Pakistan were plotting new attacks on India and urged security forces to stay on high alert.

Singh underlined that cross-border terrorism remained a “most pervasive” threat.

In response, Pakistan assured India of its “fullest cooperation” in preventing fresh acts of terror and asked India to share specific information about threats.

Relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated after attacks in the Indian financial capital Mumbai in November, in which gunmen killed 166 people.

India blamed the attacks on Pakistan-based militants and broke off a five-year-long peace process aimed at resolving outstanding issues between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Pakistan has accepted that the assault on Mumbai was partly planned on its soil and arrested five people who India said were behind the attack.

Antony said that despite India’s continuous urging, however, no Islamic militant camps had been completely dismantled along the India-Pakistan border.

The two countries have fought three wars since independence in 1947 and came dangerously close to a fourth following an attack on the Indian parliament in 2001 by militants New Delhi said came from Pakistan. AGENCIES
