Why I Love: Avoiding overuse of the Word ‘Love’

Posted by tfreak On July - 19 - 2009

love
Often when people say “I love this,” they mean they’ve experienced something and it wasn’t entirely unpleasant. You often get people saying, “I love chips” or T-shirts saying, “I love Faliraki.” So when you want to express how you feel, saying “I love you” isn’t adequate any more.

And people who say, “My life’s good, I’m really happy,” it feels a pretence, that they’re blocking out the mundanity that is the greater part of our existence. My agent says to me, “Everybody is having a hard time, so we want upbeat comedy to help them forget,” but that’s crazy. If I’m having a hard time, the last thing I want to see is people enjoy themselves. Frustrations are a far richer source of comedy.

Today’s hottest dolls Ashley Tisdale, Megan Fox, Alexis Bledel and Hayden Panattiere star in heartwarming funny films painted on different palettes of adolescent years.
Ashley Tisdale’s comedic chops will tickle every lad’s fancy in Aliens in the Attic (previously They Came from Upstairs) as she appears alongside talented youngsters Carter Jenkins and Austin Butler and veteran comedians Kevin Nealon and Gillian Vigman in this comedy adventure. Tisdale takes on the role of Bethany as the pretty teenage girl who wants to impress her older boyfriend Ricky, played by Robert Hoffman while in the midst of fighting aliens who invaded their vacation home from upstairs. As Bethany and the kids learn to help each other, audiences will be taken on a fun and wild journey full of state-of-the-art special effects and side-splittingly funny adventures.
For guys who are too coy to express their feelings, I Love You Beth Cooper will give you the courage to finally let it out your chest. In the movie, nerdy Dennis Cooverman (played by newcomer Paul Rust) surprises popular cheerleader Beth Cooper played by Hayden Panattiere when he finally proclaimed his love for the hottest girl in school during his valedictory address. Much to his surprise, Beth shows up that very night and decides to show him the best night of his life.
Alexis Bledel is an A-grade student in Post Grad where she plays Ryden Malby who did well in high school thereby receiving one of the most coveted college scholarships. But when her dream job after college is stolen by her college nemesis, Ryden is forced to move back with her eccentric family where her only upside is spending time with her best friend Adam (Zach Gilford) and meeting hot next-door neighbor David (Rodrigo Santoro).
Megan Fox goes diabolical in the intriguing, pitch-black, horror comedy Jennifer’s Body from Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno). Fox is a gorgeous cheerleader in the movie possessed by a demon who starts feeding off the boys in a small Minnesota farming town. Amanda Seyfried plays her “plain Jane” best friend and must kill her, then escape from a correctional facility to go after the Satan-worshiping rock band responsible for the horrible transformation.
Aliens in the Attic, I Love You Beth Cooper, Post Grad and Jennifer’s Body will open very soon in cinemas from 20th Century Fox films to be distributed by Warner Bros.

New Olympus E-P1 Roundup

Posted by tfreak On July - 17 - 2009

Olympus did its darnedest to drum up hype for the recently unveiled E-P1 Micro Four Thirds shooter, and while we already shared our two pennies on the thing, we figured it prudent to round up the best of the best from elsewhere on the web to give you a fuller picture. The long and short of it is this: the E-P1 is universally praised in terms of image quality, with the only real knock in that department going to higher-than-likable noise levels in low-light scenarios. Still, a camera is about more than just the output, and reviewers were quick to lament the dearth of an integrated viewfinder and flash. Furthermore, critics panned the camera for being slow to focus, oftentimes requiring well over half a second to finally settle and snap a shot. That said, we couldn’t find anyone who wasn’t won over by the image quality, but we’d make darn sure those other nuisances won’t frustrate you to no end before falling for the cute factor.

Averatec debuts 22-inch D1005 all-in-one PC for $799
Averatec’s 25.5-inch D1200 a bit too large for your tastes (or your bantam desk)? Fret not, as the very same company is today issuing a 22-inch version with similar specs. Speaking of which, the admittedly stylish all-in-one machine packs a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo E5200 processor, a WXGA panel, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320GB SATA hard drive, slot-loading DVD burner, X4500HD graphics, WiFi, gigabit Ethernet and a 2 megapixel webcam. Vista Home Premium is the OS included, but the whole rig will only set you back $799. If you’re already sold, you can place your order today at a variety of non-shady e-tailers.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (Funstylers) — Indonesian authorities believe two suicide bombers checked into the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta and carried out coordinated bombings Friday morning, killing at least six victims and wounding more than 50 others.
It is unclear what group is behind the attack on the Marriott and the adjacent Ritz-Carlton hotel, Indonesia’s National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso said at a news conference. He warned that the death toll could rise. In addition to their victims, the two bombers also died in the attacks.

Indonesian authorities have detained several witnesses and others for questioning, and have sent forensic evidence from the scene for testing, a spokesman for Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said.

“It’s all being studied now,” Dino Patti Djalal told CNN.

Yudhoyono warned that it is still too early to determine who was behind the attacks.
“This terrorist action is thought to be the work of a terrorist group, even though it is not certain whether this is the terrorism which we are familiar with up until now,” the recently reelected president said.

The bombings at the two luxury hotels — which are connected by an underground tunnel — happened shortly before 8 a.m. (9 p.m. Thursday ET) and went off 10 minutes apart, police officials said.
Five were killed at the Ritz-Carlton, and the other victim was killed at the Marriott, police spokesman Inspector General Nanan Soekarna said. A suspected suicide bomber died at each hotel as well, he said.
An unexploded bomb was found on the JW Marriott Hotel’s 18th floor where several suspects believed to be linked to the bombings were staying, Hendarso said.
It is unclear how they got around the “robust security” at the JW Marriott and the adjacent Ritz-Carlton Hotel, according to Allen Orlob, security chief for Marriott Hotels.

“We didn’t see any recent intelligence that there was an imminent threat in Jakarta,” Orlob told CNN. “As a matter of fact we were talking last night and said the situation in Jakarta seemed to have calmed down.”

The Marriott hotel in Jakarta was the site of a car bombing in August 2003 that killed 12 people.

Orlob said security remained high at the hotel.

“We kept it strong because we understood there’s always a prevailing threat here in Indonesia,” Orlob said.
Suspicion immediately fell on Jemaah Islamiyah, the Islamist terrorist network with ties to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda terrorist network that was tied to the 2003 Marriott attack and the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings that killed more than 200 people, mostly foreign tourists.
So far, there has been no claim of responsibility for the latest attack. Al Jazeera English reported that it was in touch with a JI member who denied any involvement in Friday’s hotel bombings.
The fatalities include New Zealand national Timothy David McKay, 60, according to Indonesia’s state-run Antara New Agency. McKay — the CEO of Holcim Indonesia, a cement company — was at the hotel for a meeting with fellow prominent business leaders, the Jakarta Post reported.

Indonesian media also reported that two directors of Freeport Indonesia, the largest copper and gold mining company in Indonesia, were wounded in the attacks on the two hotels.

Not satisfied with a gaming laptop that can be maxed out with a top-end Core 2 Extreme Quad processor and dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M graphics? Then how about a red gaming laptop that can be maxed out with a top-end Core 2 Extreme Quad processor and dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M graphics? That, as you might have deduced, is the latest option available on the “all powerful” Alienware M17x laptop, which takes the red accents already found on the laptop and runs with ‘em (check the gallery below for a closer look). Of course, “special editions” rarely come free, and this new Nebula Red color option is no exception, with it setting you back an extra $99 on top of the laptop’s $1,799 base price.

ASUS Eee PC T91, Really is Ready for U.S

Posted by tfreak On July - 15 - 2009

notebook1
Having showed up on Amazon earlier today, it seems the ASUS Eee PC T91 really is ready for US prime-time. The reviews have already begun to spring up across the usual suspects, so what’s the consensus? It looks like it’s time for another SlashGear review round-up, this time about what could be ASUS’ most-anticipated Eee PC to-date.
Full round-up, plus video, after the cut

One early area of controversy is price, with Notebook Review giving ASUS credit for bringing “the first budget-priced tablet netbook” to the market, while Engadget and Gizmodo aren’t so forgiving. You’re not getting a fast processor for your money, either; Liliputing found the T91 “choked on sample videos I downloaded from Microsoft’s WMV HD showcase”, while Notebook Review’s benchmarks on the 1.33GHz Atom Z520 CPU and 1GB of RAM found the T91 to be slower than most Atom N270 netbooks as well as Samsung’s VIA Nano-based NC20.

Battery life is mixed, with Notebook Review eking out 4:31 of constant use while GottaBeMobile could only manage 3.5hrs. CNET saw 4:20 of video playback before the T91 expired, while Engadget came somewhere in-between with nearly four hours of general use.

The ASUS’ compact 8.9-inch touchscreen met with mixed feelings, with Liliputing describing it as “relatively responsive” while Notebook Review found it “easy to accidentally trigger the wrong icon” when stabbing with a finger. CNET also had trouble navigating the compact panel, and Gizmodo had to use the stylus in order to be accurate. The glossy screen coating is roundly disliked, as both a glare and fingerprint magnet, and some bemoaned the lack of accelerometer auto-rotation.

Unfortunately, the area of main agreement is in disappointment with Windows XP. Since Microsoft won’t allow ASUS to use the Tablet PC Edition variant of the aging OS, they’ve been forced to develop their own touch interface. That gets praise for its appearance – Engadget call it “really nicely designed” – but the functionality is more mixed, with out-of-the-box performance good but the lack of customization a real drawback. Gizmodo describe it as “a glorified app launcher for a handful of custom apps” while GottaBeMobile are forced to “wonder if the amount of resources put into developing the TouchGate UI are really worth it in the end.”

Gizmodo’s comment – “it’s half tablet, half last-gen netbook” – says a lot. Windows XP is never showing its age more than when trying to deal with non-standard user interfaces, and it may take Windows 7 to really let the T91 shine. The ASUS Eee PC T91 is available to order now, priced at $499.99.
