Jolie Overtakes Winfrey

Posted by tfreak On June - 9 - 2009

NEW YORK: Angelina Jolie has dethroned Oprah Winfrey as the world’s most powerful celebrity, according to Forbes.

The actress grabbed the No. 1 spot from the talk show queen on the magazine’s annual Celebrity 100 list, which ranks the rich and famous based on media exposure and career earnings over the past year.

Jolie, a reigning tabloid fixture, earned $27 million, bumping her up from third place on last year’s list, Forbes said, adding that she wields more power due to high-profile turns in hit films such as “Wanted” and “Kung Fu Panda.”

At No. 2, Winfrey is still the highest earner — $275 million.

Madonna came in third, trailed by Beyonce, Tiger Woods, Bruce Springsteen and Steven Spielberg.

Two other celebs tied up in Jolie’s tabloid universe — Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt — came in at eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Tenth place goes to Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, thanks in part to endorsement deals scored after the Beijing Olympics.

About halfway down the list sits a very familiar face: President Barack Obama. At No. 49, Obama’s the first sitting head of state to appear on this Forbes fixture because of his worldwide fame, his historic election and his career as a best-selling author.

Newcomers to the list: Alec Baldwin (No. 91); Meryl Streep (No. 64); Toby Keith (No. 59); Rascal Flatts (No. 42); TV host Glenn Beck (No. 81); and teen singing superstar Taylor Swift (No. 69).

Although he’s one of the biggest acts in entertainment, Justin Timberlake went from 12th to falling off the list completely, since ending his lucrative “FutureSex/LoveShow” concert tour.

Jennifer Lopez, Johnny Depp and Tyra Banks also dropped off the list.

Manoj Kumar Turning Director

Posted by tfreak On June - 9 - 2009

manoj-kumar0906_l
NEW DELHI: Bollywood veteran Manoj Kumar is upbeat about donning the director’s hat once again in his golden jubilee year in the industry for an “Indo-Pak” love story.

The actor-turned-filmmaker may have moved on from the “Om Shanti Om” controversy, but maintains that what Shah Rukh Khan did was “dirty”.

“Though I had three subjects in mind, I decided to first go with ‘Indo-Pak: A Love Story’. The film will not revolve only around patriotism. It will have a human and romantic angle,” Manoj Kumar told.

“The film will highlight that there is a lot of commonalities between the two countries. We have the same features, our food is similar and, after all, a few years ago we were one single country,” said the 71-year-old actor, who was known as ‘Mr. Bharat’ for his patriotic films like “Upkaar”, “Shaheed” and “Purab Aur Paschim”.

Manoj Kumar said he chose such a theme as he was born in Abbottabad, a town of the North West Frontier Province located in Pakistan, adding that he would take a few Pakistani actors for the film.

“I was inclined to this subject since I have lived in Pakistan and now am living in India. I know the cultures of both the countries,” he explained. He is donning the director’s mantle after 1999 when he made “Jai Hind”.

“Shah Rukh did a dirty thing. When I reacted he then visited me, apologised and said he will remove the scene from the film, but he did not keep his promise. It was not that I get angry with people on everything, but I have to protect the image of Manoj Kumar. Later when he removed the scene, I dropped the matter,” Manoj Kumar said.

“It’s been two years and now I don’t have any grudges against him. He is just like a younger brother to me,” he added.

Manoj Kumar said he would like to cast new faces in his new venture though he likes Aamir Khan best among the current lot of heroes.

“I like Aamir’s work and I’m particularly happy that he is doing less and only meaningful work, but for my film I want fresh faces,” the Padma Shri awardee said.

“I am negotiating with a few actors, but nothing is confirmed as of now. I have decided to take one or two actors from Pakistan for the film,” he said.

Asked if he would like to act in his film or take up other acting assignments, the yesteryears actor said: “I will never impose myself on a script. If there is a suitable role for me in a film, then I will do it; otherwise I won’t push myself into it.”

“As far as signing any other film is concerned, I have always been very focused about the kind of work I want to do. In 50 years I have worked in only 42 films. I have always believed in quality and meaningful cinema and not quantity. If I get something like that, I will do it,” he added.

NEW YORK – The date for Whitney Houston’s comeback has been set.

Arista Records says her long-awaited album will be released Sept. 1. Houston hasn’t released a CD in seven years.

So far, there’s no word on a title for the album.

The 45-year-old superstar is one of the best-selling artists of all-time, but in recent years, she’s been defined more by drug problems, marital woes and erratic behavior than by her Grammy-winning voice.

But lately, Houston has appeared to return to her pop princess form. She wowed the crowd when she performed at her mentor Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party in February.

Boycotts Australia Over Attacks

Posted by tfreak On June - 9 - 2009

bollywood-union5006_l
MUMBAI: Bollywood’s biggest labour union said Thursday its members would refuse to work in Australia until attacks on Indian students there ceased.

Two Bollywood movies - including one by Bollywood’s largest producer, Yash Raj Films — were to be shot in Australia this month.

“None of our associate members will work in Australia until the racism issue is resolved,” Dinesh Chaturvedi, head of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE).

FWICE, which represents 250,000 workers, including actors, lighting and sound technicians, camera operators and dancers, issued a notice to all Bollywood producers announcing the boycott.

It was the latest snub by Bollywood over a wave of assaults on Indian students which have strained diplomatic relations between India and Australia.

Last weekend, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan rejected an honorary doctorate from a Brisbane university, in protest against the attacks on Indian students.

Three recent Bollywood box-office hits — Salaam Namaste (Greetings), Chak de India (Go India) and Heyy Baby — were shot extensively in Australia.

The union’s announcement came a day after another attack on an Indian student was reported in Australia.

Police said a 21-year-old Indian student was confronted Tuesday by five men in a college campus car park in the suburbs of the southern city of Melbourne, where many of the attacks have taken place.

They demanded money and cigarettes from the man, then attacked him when he refused to comply, with one slashing him across the chest with a weapon believed to be a box cutter, causing minor lacerations.

The issue came to world attention late last month when student Sravan Kumar Theerthala was left comatose after being stabbed with a screwdriver by gatecrashers at a Melbourne party.

Many of the most serious cases occurred in Melbourne, where police estimate Indians account for about 30 percent of all robbery and assault victims.

India’s media have dubbed the attacks “curry bashing,” and newspapers have been splashed with headlines such as “Australia, land of racists.”

The Australian government has called in the former head of Australia’s elite Special Air Service (SAS) regiment to lead a task force examining the attacks.
