Al-Qaeda holed up in Yemen after Pakistan: Petraeus

Posted by bhoot On January - 10 - 2010

americanWASHINGTON: The U.S. military does not intend to put ground troops in Yemen, a country where al Qaeda operatives have become an increasing threat, Gen. David Petraeus said while talking to a US-based news channel in an interview to be aired Sunday.

However, the United States plans to more than double its security assistance funding to Yemen, from $70 million to more than $150 million, Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour at CENTCOM headquarters in Tampa.

Petraeus, who recently returned from his visit to the Arab nation, said Yemen’s foreign minister was “quite clear that Yemen does not want to have American ground troops there. And that’s a good — good response for us to hear, certainly.”

Asked on whether there were plans to send troops there, he replied, “No, of course, we would always want a host nation to deal with a problem itself. We want to help. We’re providing assistance.”

“Again, we haven’t discussed the assistance that we have provided in Yemen, and I’m afraid I won’t here today,” he said.

The general said the United States has been concerned about al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula for several years, saying, “Without question, it has ramped up over the course of the last year or more in particular, with training camps and so forth there.”

Still, in comments made off camera, Petraeus said the group “isn’t industrial strength.”

Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh has told the United States that Yemen rather handle al Qaeda on its own, and the United States plans to honor that, Petraeus said.

“It threatened the embassies of various countries that are important to Yemen and, in fact, assassinated some government officials,” Petraeus said, referring to the al Qaeda branch in Yemen. “So there is an enormous incentive here for President Saleh and the government of Yemen, indeed, to confront al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and the growth that we have seen in its training camp structure and the other infrastructure that they’ve been able to establish in recent years.”

Petraeus said al Qaeda’s growth in Yemen became increasingly worrisome for him two years ago. Washington began to view the ancestral home of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden as a possible haven for the group as early as 2001.

As al Qaeda was pushed out of Saudi Arabia — and under pressure in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan — they took refuge in Yemen, he said.

Last Sunday, the United States decided to briefly close its embassy in Yemen after intelligence suggested that four al Qaeda operatives may be planning an attack on the compound. The embassy reopened Tuesday. Britain, too, closed its embassy Sunday, citing security concerns, while other foreign embassies beefed up security or closed to the public.

Yet, Petraeus said Yemen is not the most important locale in the U.S. war on terror. “That would likely still be the western Pakistan-Afghanistan border area,” he said.

“We have not devoted the kind of resources to it that is necessary. I know what it takes. We built an intelligence structure, we built an entire organization overall in Iraq to conduct counterinsurgency operations. And it requires a significant commitment.

“We are now making that kind of commitment to Afghanistan, but we had not before.”

The general added that strides have been made in the fight against terrorists.

“I think there’s been progress overall over the course of the last year against al Qaeda,” Petraeus said. “I think that in general its capability has diminished, but that’s only, again, a relative judgment … Al Qaeda does still have an ability there to carry out periodic horrific attacks, and so we must maintain the pressure on Al Qaeda wherever it is found.”

One-night stand is fine: Neha Dhupia

Posted by trixum On January - 1 - 2010

Neha Dhupia made headlines with her line ‘In India only SRK and Sex sell’. Now the focus is on her again with Pritish Nandy Communications’ Raat Gayi Baat Gayi releasing tomorrow.

The movie, produced by Rangita Pritish Nandy and directed by Saurabh Shukla, won the best film award at the HBO Asian International Film Festival in New York last month. Neha plays the mysterious gorgeous woman hunted down by Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak and Dalip Tahil, after a night of lots of drinking, sex and zero memory! Ask her if it’s a bold role and she replies candidly, “If you are asking in terms of skin show, then no. But if being bold is a state of mind, then yes.” That’s Neha for you. Not one to mince words, the actress speaks to BT about relationships, sex and movies…

What’s your take on one-night stands?
The problem with one-night stands is that you end up hurting so many people. As long as you are not hurting any one, it’s fine.

In Raat Gayi Baat Gayi you have a one-night stand with a married man…
There are seven characters in the film! Why do you assume it’s my character who’s had the one-night stand? Are you assuming that because I am attractive… Not fair!

Do you think the Indian audience is opening up to sex in movies?
Dev D was a big hit. Indian audiences are open to fantastic scripts. Raat Gayi… is a funny kind of a thrilling experience that takes you through a drunken night. You don’t really know what happened last night. The film is packed with a lot of emotions and it is very relatable. You can relate to one or the other character.

You’ve done movies of various genres… what’s your favourite?
It’s very hard for me to say that. Right from my roles in Singh Is Kinng, De Dana Dan, Mithya, Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local to Raat Gayi Baat Gayi, everything is challenging and at the same time everything is easy. I don’t over-intellectualise the whole acting medium. I’m not working because I have to work. I’m working because I really enjoy doing so.

Are you happy with the way your career has shaped up so far?
I am. I had made a few mistakes, but I don’t regret anything. They have been learning experiences. I have come a long way, but I also have a long way to go…

T-Mobile UK G2 Touch (aka HTC Hero) Due this Month

Posted by tfreak On July - 10 - 2009

T-Mobile UK have reconfirmed that they will be launching their version of the HTC Hero this month, and added that they will be again changing its name. Rather than the 3.2-inch touchscreen smartphone being known as the G1Touch, as originally suggested, it will now be called the T-Mobile G2 Touch.

Updated with pricing details after the cut.
The carrier is still yet to announce pricing for the smartphone, which has 3G HSPA, WiFi b/g, Bluetooth, GPS and HTC’s new Sense UI system. However since rival Orange have already revealed that they will be offering the Hero from free with a new, two-year contract, we’d expect T-Mobile UK to do the same so as to remain competitive.

Their announcement comes on the heels of news from T-Mobile USA that they have no plans to offer the Hero. Speaking at the launch of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, also known as the HTC Magic, CTO Cole Brodman confirmed that they would not be adding the latest HTC device to their line-up.

Update: T-Mobile UK have confirmed that the G2Touch will be free with a new 18-month contract at £40 per month; the tariff will be one of their Flext schemes, offering £225-worth of credit per month to be used as the subscriber sees fit.
